| Set in the coastal community of Upper Kingsburg, Sliding House offers panoramic vistas onto ocean waves, distant cliffs and hills dotted with farmhouses. The spectacular two mile-long Hirtle's Beach is just a few minutes by car. Sliding House is a 1,700 sq-ft residence commissioned by creative directors David Peters and Rhonda Rubinstein and designed by the renown architect—and Kingsburg neighbour—BRIAN MACKAY-LYONS. Its cool exterior opens up to reveal a serene interior finished entirely in warm poplar hardwood. Since completion in 2008, the building's dramatic placement on a eight-degree slope and its striking simplicity have drawn considerable attention. It's been featured in the Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century World Architecture, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Italian design magazine Interni, and the Dutch magazine Villas. A photo essay of the house by Belgian photographer JEAN-LUC LALOUX is essential viewing. Rent it for one week or two. Weekly rates are: May 1–June 30: $1800/week. June 30–September 1: $2250/week. September 1–November 3: $1800. Sliding House is a great escape for those who love experiencing nature while staying in a unique, architecturally acclaimed retreat by the sea.
